Meet our Speakers
When Tom Vander Well was eight he planned on being President of the United States. That didn’t pan out, nor did his dreams of playing guitar with Bob Dylan, playing Hamlet on Broadway, or preaching for Billy Graham. What did work out for Tom was being a relatively successful businessman and blogger with a modest reputation as speaker, actor and playwright. Tom lives in Pella, Iowa with his wife Wendy. They have two adult daughters.
Matthew Burch grew up in Southern California with a full head of hair, a college nickname of “Ken” (as in the stud-muffin boyfriend of Barbie), and a dream of sailing to exotic places. What Matthew did not expect was to end up follicle-challenged and surviving Midwest winters in Pella, Iowa, where he has been a marriage and family therapist for over 20 years. Matthew also consults businesses and organizations and is a leader with Vantage Point 3. He lives in Pella with his wife, Sarah, three daughters and a son.
God made men with an inherent sense that we are called to be warriors, kings, and conquerors. It starts with playing “king of the mountain” on the playground and transforms into a competitive desire to achieve and succeed in studies, athletics, hobbies, business, marriage and fatherhood. Our souls stir to the idea of being another Braveheart or Maximus, Jordan or Jobs.
Then we wake up each morning and look in the mirror. The guy we see feels more Bozo than Braveheart, more Moron than Maximus. We suck it up, stuff it down, and plod on. We zone out, escape, and cover up.
But what if there truly is something more to this that we have yet to discover?
God tells us that we are more than conquerors. We are brothers and co-heirs to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and we are blessed in the spiritual realm with every blessing. Yet, these realities are blocked and distorted by earthbound, nagging feelings of inadequacy, impotence, anxiety, and fear.
More Than Conquerors is a workshop designed equip and empower men to experience more fully the man God created us to be. It’s a Friday night and Saturday journey in which we will loosen the spiritual chains that bind us, step into the breach, and learn how to follow our King to victorious life.
