God Knows Us (Jeremiah 1:1-10, Psalm 139:13-16)
Did you know that you are living an epic story? It’s true. Maybe you’re thinking, “Um, no. There’s nothing epic about my life.” But scripture says otherwise.
To Jeremiah, God said, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” David the psalmist said of God, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” God knew you, knew all of us, before we were even conceived. And He made us! That’s pretty amazing.
Also, God loves us and takes care of us: “’Do not be afraid . . . for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord” to Jeremiah. God had a plan for us even before we were born. “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be,” writes David. We were the beneficiaries of God’s mercy and grace even before we came into the world.
Our role in this epic story is not just as passive observers. Yes, God knows us intimately, loves us passionately, and chooses us to be His children. But in return, God wants us to love Him and to know Him. The Bible is the story of God’s relationship with His people. This story isn’t just one told TO us; it’s also one written ABOUT us. And it’s epic.
