Wisdom and Discipline

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

At the beginning of the biblical book of Proverbs, Solomon states his purpose by saying that his proverbs are…“for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair.” Proverbs 1:2-3
I am thinking that wisdom and discipline are related but different. [...]

Thoughts on Psalm 27
Lately, Psalm 27 has been very helpful to me as I wade through life’s muck. Here’s some thoughts, shared over the next few blog entries. David, the author, was apparently facing severe challenges, “evil men, enemies, war, armies”, people wanting to attack and kill him.
What is the one thing [...]

The Heart of Royalty, part 6

Friday, June 5th, 2009

He looked intensely into Simon’s eyes. Simon wanted to answer correctly, wanted to please the young Prince at that moment more than anything else in life. But he wasn’t sure what the answer was; the heart of royalty? “I’m not sure.” Said Simon.
David smiled. “You are not far from being sure, [...]

The Heart of Royalty, part 5

And as they talked, sometimes trying to include Simon, and sometimes talking between themselves, Simon came to another startling realization. King George had fixed the widow’s step! And it sounded like he did these things regularly! His work clothes, his dirty hands, the sweat on his brow were a normal part of [...]

The heart of Royalty part 3

At that the Prince stood, dismissed the council and left the table. As the council members stood and congratulated each other on their fine report, Simon watched the young Prince walking briskly out of the hall. Soon servants appeared carrying food of all types: meats, cheeses, fruit and breads. The tables were rearranged and the [...]

Jericho

Jesus visits Jericho as we read in Luke, chapters 18-19.
I am guessing that Jericho was a pretty cool vacation spot. Have you ever visited an historic battlefield, like Gettysburg? It’s pretty cool to see the place where these amazing, history making events took place.
Jericho probably had a neat visitor center. First you watched the video [...]

don’t give up

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Jesus told a parable. Luke records it in chapter 18:1-5. Luke is determined that we don’t miss the point of the parable, so he gives us the moral of the story right at the beginning, “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”
I think, [...]

Jay's Blog
In his book, Surprised by Hope, Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church, N. T. Wright writes this, “Paul…writes a phrase in Aramaic: Marana tha. It means, ‘Our Lord, come!’ and goes back (like the word Abba, ‘father’) to the very early Aramaic-speaking church. There is no reason why the Greek-speaking [...]

humility and confidence

Jay's Blog
Ever struggle with humility and ability? I have and do. I know I am to be humble, and quite often God reminds me of how much I have to be humble about! But then, just when I am well on my way to humility and general debasement, I get to thinking about my abilities [...]

Jay's Blog
This Sunday we are continuing in our theme, What Happens when we Die? (and what does it matter?). The topic for Sunday is Resurrection.
The blessed hope of the gospel is not that we get to go to heaven when we die. That’s what we learned last week. The blessed hope is that God is [...]
